What Recruiting-101 will never ever teach if you are going through the football recruiting process

What Recruiting-101 will never teach you during the football recruiting processThe main reason why I started this website was to help athletes, families, and even coaches throughout the athletic recruiting process.  It didn’t matter what sport you are playing or what sport you want to play at the college level.  The majority of these articles may have a football or basketball theme but they can carry over to other sports.  This refers to an older incident but is certainly worth avoiding at all costs.

When writing articles, I try to help athletes get evaluated by college coaches and doing what I can to help them make the best decision that they can when they eventually make a final call on their college.  And after Signing Day 2009, I have seen what may have been the dumbest and/or craziest decision as to how an athlete decided on what school he wanted to go to.  The outcome was decided by a coin flip.

The name of the athlete was Ka’Lial Glaud.  This senior had a number of Division I scholarship offers from all over the country.  Instead of doing a pros and cons list about the school or really thinking about what his gut told him, he let his college fate rely on heads or tails.  When I heard this, I just could not believe it.  Here is what the article said (click here for the full article):

Just before making his final decision, the Winslow Township High School senior football player flipped a quarter given to him by principal Glen Jackson.

Heads – West Virginia.

Tails – Rutgers.

An All-South Jersey linebacker this past season and a three-year captain for the Eagles, Glaud will attend Rutgers. He put on a Scarlet Knights hat right after the coin landed on tails.

Glaud joins Logan Ryan (Eastern), Aaron Hayward (Penns Grove) and Quron Pratt (Palmyra) as South Jersey players to select the Big East school. Today is the first day of the regular signing period – traditionally known as National Signing Day.

“Tails came up, so that’s when I decided Rutgers,” Glaud said at a press conference held in the school cafeteria before family, friends and school officials. “I didn’t know where I was going to go.”

I am confident to say that Glaud never visited this site.  With so many offers, why try to learn more about the recruiting process.  What is so frustrating about this to me is that there are so many avid readers here who have followed all the advice and are just not talented enough to earn a Division I scholarship offer.  Well, apparently common sense of actually making a college decision is not something these schools thought about before offering someone like this.  Good luck Rutgers.
