Cold sending highlight video tapes to college coaches and more on how they can factor into the football recruiting process overall

Cold sending highlight video tapes to college coaches and more on how they can affect the football recruiting processI recently received an email from a very loyal reader of Recruiting-101.  This helpful aunt has been doing everything she can to help her nephew in the recruiting process and that includes gathering as much recruiting information as possible to help him hopefully land a scholarship down the line.  And from what she has emailed with me about, she is doing almost everything I have written and talked about on the site.

But one thing she mentioned is how they were cold sending his recruiting highlight videos out to college coaches (please see our definitions page for those who are not aware of what cold sending is).  While this is something I would not recommend, she was telling me about the great response that she received from a school in the Big 12 that has been successful in recent seasons.  The coaches at that school requested more film, started showing interest, and got the ball rolling with the recruiting process.  So have I changed my stance after this story?

In a short answer, no.  I still believe the most efficient way to get your highlight tape viewed by a college coach, regardless of the sport, is by sending out your recruiting profile via email beforehand.  This at least gets you on their radar.  Once the contact has been established, you can email them and ask them about getting your highlight video evaluating and what else needs to be done throughout the recruiting process.  If they are aware of you, chances are much higher that your tape will be watched by the coaching staff.

While I have not heard recently about how much other response that they have received with cold sending highlight videos, I feel that there might be a few reasons why this certain college did respond.  I will say right now that this program is not Texas.  It is a school that has had a lot of success recently with recruiting players on the radar and finding diamonds in the rough.  Schools like this have to show interest to all recruits that are interested in their program.  The reason is because when they offer a kid, they are not going to wow them by the name factor of their school.  They will get them because the coaches work hard, show interest, and do everything they can to recruit them.

I know that no matter how many times I say this and write about how cold sending is not the way to go, readers are still going to do it.  But I remain strong in my stance that in at least 75% of the cases (if not more), you are wasting your time and money trying to do it.  Take the time beforehand and email the school your recruiting profile.  No, that won’t guarantee you an offer but it is the best step in my eyes to get evaluated by a college coach.  And getting evaluated is the best way to get a scholarship offer.

One quick story I must mention again that I have said before.  There was a recruit in the Class of 2011 that ended up with double digit scholarship offers and was being seriously recruited by one school in the Big Ten.  This was a successful school that had won a lot of games and was showing this athlete interest.  But for whatever reason, the program did not have it together when finding highlight videos.  They requested that the video of this player be sent four different times before they finally were able to watch it.  If it takes this long to watch a video of a prospect they want to see of (and someone they eventually offered), think how long it would take if you cold sent them your tape?
